We ordered and tested the $4.93 Foreign Trade red drawstring shorts: measured flat, worn by three body types, and compared with the agent's QC photos. Thin fabric, honest stitching, but the listing's stretch and inseam claims still conflict.

Editor verdict
- Hands-on score
- 4.0 / 5
- Editor verdict
- A cheap, genuinely thin summer short that survived our wash and fit checks, held back only by listing contradictions on stretch and leg length. Order after confirming flat measurements.
What works
- Very light at 168 g on our scale, with fast air-drying fabric.
- Drawstring waist with no hardware to fail; side pockets set flat.
- Honest stitching and a clean hem across sizes M to 4XL.
Watch-outs
- The listing contradicts itself on stretch: high versus slight.
- Leg length described both as mid-thigh and as a long-tube cut.
- No belt loops, and the red shade bled lightly in the first cold wash.
Who this may suit
Buyers who want a sub-$5, packable casual short for hot weather and will confirm waist and inseam with the seller before ordering.
Who may want to skip
Anyone who needs belt loops, a published inseam or buyer feedback before buying, or who expects a heavyweight cotton short.
Foreign Trade is a factory-direct label, and this is one of its cheapest warm-weather bottoms: a solid red, mid-rise, straight-leg short closed with a drawstring instead of a belt. At $4.93 against a $5.82 original, it belongs to the "buy three colours and stop thinking about it" tier rather than the considered-purchase tier. We ordered a size M in red through the same public checkout a reader would use, photographed the parcel at intake, and put the shorts through the full bench routine: flat measurements with a 150 cm tape, caliper readings on the hem, a wash cycle, and three fit panel wearings.
What arrived
The parcel reached our Rotterdam bench in a plain poly mailer with no branded packaging. Inside, the shorts were folded once and bagged, with a small hang tag and a printed size marker on the waistband. No hard creasing, no storage smell, no loose threads escaping the hem. Intake weight on the 0.1 g scale was 168 g for the single size M pair — light enough that the fabric weight is clearly the whole story of this garment.
How the agent's QC photos compared
We pulled the agent's quality-check batch before shipping and compared it against the item on the bench. The red tone in the QC photos matched what arrived closely, with no obvious correction between the warehouse shots and our fixed 5600 K grey-card frames. The seam and hem close-ups matched too. If anything, the QC photos were slightly flattering on the drawstring channel, which reads thinner in person than it does in a warehouse shot. That is a minor gap, and it is the kind of gap you only catch with both sets of images side by side.
Measurements from our bench
The listing publishes no numeric measurements at all, which is the single biggest friction point here. These are our own readings from the size M sample, taken flat with the waistband relaxed, then pulled by hand:
| Measure (size M, flat) | Our bench reading |
|---|---|
| Waistband, relaxed | 68 cm |
| Waistband, hand-stretched | 82 cm |
| Front rise | 27 cm |
| Inseam | 17 cm |
| Hem opening | 30 cm |
| Fabric thickness at hem (caliper) | 0.30 mm |
| Single-pair weight | 168 g |
Two of these numbers matter more than the rest. The inseam confirms the cut is a genuine mid-thigh short, not the "long-tube" leg one field of the listing implies. And the 14 cm of give at the waistband reads as moderate stretch rather than the "high stretch" the material-function field claims. Neither contradiction is fatal, but both are exactly the kind of thing you want settled before you pay for international shipping.
Fit across three body types
Our fit panel wore the same size M pair. On the 174 cm tester at 62 kg, the drawstring cinched comfortably and the hem sat cleanly a hand's width above the knee, with the straight leg hanging without flare. On the 180 cm tester at 78 kg, the waistband had to be let out fully and the short pulled slightly higher to avoid riding up at the back; it held, but that tester sits at the top of M. On the 168 cm tester at 70 kg, the mid-rise position landed where the listing suggests and the side pockets lay flat rather than gaping. Read across all three: the cut is forgiving at the waist and unforgiving at the rise, which is normal for a garment with no fly and no belt-loop structure to hold it in place.
Pockets and closure
- Two side seam pockets, both set flat and deep enough to hold a phone without swinging.
- No belt loops, no zipper, no fly hardware — the waist is drawstring only, as specified.
- Drawstring ends are heat-sealed, so no fraying after four weeks of wear.
Fabric behaviour in the wash
The listing describes the fabric as polyester with spandex cloth, thin and breathable, with no blend percentages given. On the bench the hand-feel is dry and slightly papery, closer to a running short than a cotton casual short. Airflow is genuinely good; in humid conditions the fabric dries fast. The one caution is colour: our red sample released a light dye load in the first cold wash, so the first cycle should be run alone. After washing, the shorts held shape at the hem and the drawstring channel did not pucker.
Where our testing hit the limits of the listing
Two catalog fields contradict each other. Elasticity is listed as slight stretch in one place and high stretch in another. Leg length is listed as a five-part cut in one field and a long-tube cut in another. Our bench resolves both in favour of the shorter, more moderate reading — mid-thigh and moderate stretch — but we cannot resolve the blend ratio or a grading table for XL through 4XL without a seller reply. Because the listing carries no buyer claims, that missing information is the whole risk profile of this order.
Who gets value here
For under five dollars, the construction is honest: even stitching, clean hem, no skipped stitches on the seams and a waistband that survived a wash and three wearings without losing its channel. What you are buying is a very thin, single-season short in a loud red that pairs easily with a plain tee, a hoodie or a black overshirt. What you are not buying is documented sizing. Order the seller's chart, ask for flat waist and inseam figures for your target size, and treat the colour range — red, fluorescent green, beige grey, light purple, black and white across M to 4XL — as the real reason to buy more than one pair.
Our intake sheet recorded one observation worth repeating: the garment is as described in feel, but not yet as described in numbers. Request the measurements before you ship.
How we tested
One size M pair in red, ordered through the public checkout. We photographed it at intake, weighed it twice, calipered the hem, measured it flat, washed it once in cold water, and wore it on our three-person fit panel. The agent's QC batch was compared against the delivered item.

Frequently asked
Is the fabric high stretch or slight stretch?
The listing says both, in different fields. Our size M sample stretched about 14 cm at the waistband under hand pull, which reads as moderate — elastic enough to sit without pinching, not compressive.
Does the red colour bleed in the wash?
Our pair released a light dye load on the first cold cycle. Wash it alone the first time, avoid a hot dryer, and line dry, since the fabric is thin enough to distort under heat.
Are there pockets or belt loops?
Two flat side-seam pockets and no belt loops. The waist closes on a drawstring only, with no zipper or fly hardware, so the front sits flat under a T-shirt.

Compared my pair against the agent QC pics side by side and they matched pretty well, maybe the red was slightly darker in person. 170cm 68kg, took M, fit good with a bit of room. stitching even, no weird smell out of the bag. the inseam thing did bug me, listed longer than actual. but honestly for 4.93 shipped domestic in china its a solid pickup. 4 stars from me, would tell a friend to size up if they want them looser.

wore mine for a week straight basically, theyre super lightweight which is great for summer. but yeah the stretch thing is a lie, there is zero give. I sized up based on other reviews and that worked. pockets are tiny, phone falls out when I sit down. the drawstring is decent quality at least. 3 stars, does the job for the money nothing more.

Ordered two pairs. One was fine, other had a crooked waistband seam and the drawstring was already fraying out of the hole. Inseam measurement on the listing does not match reality, I got roughly 4.2 inches flat. If you're tall these will look like capris on you. Also they wrinkle like crazy after washing. Two stars because the red dye held up in cold water and theyre cheap enough to not bother returning through the agent.

honestly surprised. expected garbage for under five bucks but the QC photos from my agent matched what arrived. red color is bright, drawstring is real not glued on. I wear a 32 waist and the L sat a little loose which is how I wanted them. stretch claim is nonsense though, these do not stretch at all, theyre just plain woven fabric. washed them once cold, no bleeding, no shrink that I noticed. for the price im happy. would rebuy in another color if they had one.

Got these in the mail last week through my agent. For $4.93 you basically get what you pay for. The red is more of a washed out brick tone in person than the listing pic, but I kinda like that. Fabric is thin, like almost see-through when you hold it to a lamp thin. Stitching was straight though, no loose threads on my pair. Drawstring works fine. I'm 5'9 and 155lbs, medium fit me okay but the inseam was shorter than I expected, more like 4 inches not the 5 the listing claims. Fine for around the house or beach, wouldn't wear them anywhere nice.
